Nice Way to Terminate…about time

23 February 2007

One of my clients was confronted with a challenging staff.  She was constantly complaining; tardy to the huddles; always expecting the doctor to pay more and more to her health insurance coverage (never enough for this employee); creating disharmony among the other staff claiming he was a lousy boss; got upset when he would speak to her about improving her productivity (she was a hygienist) proclaiming he was “all about money”; and the list goes on.  Finally, after nearly 18 months of tolerating this kind of nonsense and all the upset among his team, he terminated her with what he defines as a “FRIENDSHIP TALK“.  When he uttered the words, “I am inviting you to be successful elsewhere”, she paused and said: “why are you firing me?” (I think she was comatose)  His response: “I like you and want to be your friend……..that’s why I want you to leave.”  Astounded and incredulous, this cantankerous and negative element to his office left.  Moral of the story:  don’t wait 18 months…and when terminating, be kind and considerate in your language.
