Dental Practice Management–Finding & Retaining Sharp Talent

29 January 2007

There is a WAR for talent going on right now.  Many of us in dentistry are clueless to this battle and we behave as though it isn’t a major concern.  Perhaps for you it isn’t…but for many, many others it is a challenge.  On the front page of the Cleveland Plain Dealer there is an “eye-opening” article about what you might do to assure you find and retain quality employees.  What are you finding in your part of the country as the pool of candidates for jobs seems to be dwindling?  Perhaps I need to restate that……..there are lots of people out there, simply not many of them with “what it takes” to fill the jobs that require excellent customer/patient care.  What are you doing in your office to RETAIN the talent after you have found it?  Many of us look around after someone has “left” and wonder: “what the hell just happened here?”  Why did she/he leave?  I take great care of my employees.  I was nice!?”  I’d love to hear any of your HIRING nightmare stories or tips you want to share about what you do to keep and retain quality staff.

Like most, I’ve found that building a strong team is the greatest challenge for a dental office (or any other business). Eagle team members must be either found or grown.

I read a terrific book called “Up Your Team” that specifically addressed team and leadership issues. The author, Dave Anderson, describes “eagle” recruitement and retention strategies.

One of the strategies he suggests is creating a specific recruitement website. I put in the effort and made one for our team: http://www.YourNewTeam.com

The site has been very helpful in finding good people. We include the site in any help-wanted ad and it serves as a filter. Good candidates are excited by it, and poor ones are scared off.
