Dr. Ron’s Dental Practice Management Coaching Challenge…Christmas Bonus Checks?

11 December 2006

“Every year…..more, more, more and they never seem satisfied.”  This is a comment I frequently hear from doctors all over the country.  From the staff I hear: “last year he gave us $100 and this year he cheaped out with only $125.” Or…“we worked hard this year and we deserve it.”  Or….“he is so hard to work with we need a Christmas Bonus to simply stay another year.”  What’s your thoughts?  Should Christmas bonus be a ritual….an expected part of annual compensation?  All perspectives are invited……..

    Hi Ron,

For 36 years now I have given Christmas Bonus’ to my team members. If I had growth in my practice in production and collections I incresed it. If I stay the same I lower it.
I give it for business reasons, spiritual reasons and because it makes me feel good. Is it expected? By now for the employees that have been with me over 5 to 25 years I am sure they come to expect it. Does that bother me? A little if they do not say thank you. But remmember it is the joy in giving that plays a part in my Christmas Bonus. The bonus’s run as high as $500 plus the shopping spree on Team Appreciation day of $150. Not a great deal of money. Perhaps the employees (who have been with me for 25, 26, 13 and 13 years) are loyal because of the Giving Attitude that is expressed by me in this Christian Holy Holiday which celebrates the gifts of the wise men to Jesus and the gift of Jesus from God. Of course that is my opion but I am firm in this belief.
