Dr. Ron’s BLOG Challenge

16 October 2006

This week I had one of my clients call with an “emergency” situation.  He was frantic; angry; and on the warpath.  He insisted that it was IMPOSSIBLE to find good help these days.”  He then went on to explain thas his Office Manager (what a misnomer…Coach’s comment) was not doing her job; failed to follow instructions; and in his words: “she just doesn’t do what I ask.”   When I asked him what he wanted to do with this situation and this particular employee he stated: “I want to fire her….however, I can’t do that because I need someone at the front desk.  Coach Ron, you just don’t understand, front desk people in my neck of the woods are hard to find.”  What advise would you give this client?  How many of you have had this similiar situation?

I agree, GOOD help is difficult to find, but when you do find it, you know you’ve “FOUND” it! It’s the greatest reward! Perhaps you need to keep looking, or discover ways to unite in both your perceptions of fulfilling the obligations of her role.

I’m confused…..is this person your “front desk” or your Office Manager? Although I can see that they could wear both hats, if she isn’t doing what you ask, she is not an Office Manager. Perhaps only one of the roles is all she can handle. (?)

Do you meet with her regularly and direct her to what it is you “want her to do”?

I do not know your situation, but I have experienced frustration occassionally, when I have not been guided to what my Dr. has “wanted”. I frequently put a sign on his door asking, “What do you want”? It is my way of knowing and understanding (humorously)if I am following his lead, instead of making the incorrect assumption that I was doing what he desires and expects.

It is very important to me that I make my doctor happy. Perhaps it her desire as well, but she hasn’t known how to accomplish that. I have found a few times that I proceeded with a task, considering I was doing what my doctor asked, only to find later that that wasn’t his desire at all. (Now that’s devastating!)

Is it possible that she may think that she is doing a good job? Meet with her…..communicate your desires — most of us want parameters to what is expected of us and feel a sense of accomplishment when we have completed our doctor’s expectations.

And if she can’t comply, let her know her position is now vacant.

One last comment, perhaps referring to her in a different text other than “front desk” may give her a different perspective. Perhaps she is performing as a “front desk” only….

Best wishes! I do hope you find the help you are seeking! Don’t give up…….good help is out there and appears when you least expect it!
