Dr. Ron’s BLOG Challenge

8 October 2006

One of my clients took his coach’s recommendation to “survey” his staff about how they felt the office was operating.  They were invited to reply ananomously ranking their satisfaction on a scale of 1 to 10 with ten being wonderful and one being horrible.  The replies came back less that what the doctor had hoped for…..and quite frankly he was disappointed and a bit defensive with the scores.  Wanting to learn more and find solutions, I suggested he invite his staff to provide more detail to me in the form of an ananomous fax so that I would have a better understanding of some of the challenges facing this team.  They did and many of the replies I received were abrupt, frank, angry, and explained that some staff were not pleased with the current environment.  As you can imagine, the doctor really wanted to know who said what.  We all know what retaliation can be like.  However, to honor the confidentiality originally established, he and I agreed to no names.  So here is the challenge……..the names and the comments remain ananomous, yet the challenges require individual attention and not simply a “broad brush” attack.  How would you suggest this doctor communicate with his team to come to resolution of some rather challenging issues.  While the confidentaility enabled people to speak up, how do we now deal with the individual upsets…..whether real or perceived?

Depends on how far he wants to go to get to the root of the issues. Do the issues stem from a team member, the enviroment of the practice or the Dr himself? If it is the environment the Dr has created for his team, it is something he should invest in modifying because new team members will have the same issues . . . eventually! :) Have they done the “winslow”?? This was a great way for all of us to understand eachother, our personality differences and needs. We were also able to understand the Dr better and for the Dr to understand us better!

Or, Perhaps a 3rd party to come in and “counsel” the Dr’s and team members individually to get to the root of the issues! It may just be personality clashes!! This way each person can meet with this “liason” and know that their identity will remain annonymous. The anonnimity needs to remain a constant, unless the team member/s are comfortable at some point with volunteering this information. If that trust barrier is broken, forget it! We did something like this in our office and it was helpful.
